Virtual Internship Program

Who else wants to be a Maui Media Virtual Intern?

Aloha from Maui Media, and we're glad you made it to this page.

First step, read the About Us page. Then come back here.

Seriously. Do it now.
Go read About Us and then come back.

Still with us? Good.

If you’re one of our Virtual Interns, we’ll work together to figure out a project that you will LOVE doing.

You’ll work remotely. You'll be on your equipment, on a schedule that you choose. You'll play your own music, dress how you like, eat when you want.

We communicate and collaborate via a very cool online workspace with all of our team members - no matter where they live or what time zone they're in.

That way, there's always regular feedback and contact with us here in the "home office" on Maui.

In the end, of course, you'll have earned your own place in Maui - at least for seven nights.

Each intern who successfully completes their internship is rewarded with a solid week in our sunny one-bedroom ohana (vacation rental)...

 ... with a full kitchen ...
... full bath ...
... private laundry...
... half a block from the bluest
most delightful beach on Maui.

How many interns do we have?

Ten. Five. One. Twenty. We don’t have a number. Instead, we have standards.

Our standards for skill, native talent, ambition, hard work, creativity, and vision are high – just ask our previous intern Crystal (you’ll meet her later on this page), or ask Kate, our hotshot web design intern:

"Amazing Experience"

My internship with Maui Media was truly an amazing experience.

I learned lots of different things throughout the year in both print and web media, but most of all I learned about marketing and the different ways you can go about it.  The individuals that make up Maui Media are very  unique people, I learned not only about the job but also about myself.  I will cherish these individuals for my entire life knowing they are making a difference.

I worked on projects ranging from environmental, to spiritual to just more simple everyday things.  Maui Media is a company that can take you far, teach you about things that no one else can.

My favorite project was "Do You Remember Love?" by far, it is something that I will look back on and truly cherish and be proud of. I look forward to the day that it is a common thing for someone to say "Have you seen the "Do You Remember Love?" site?" because I know that day will come.

This internship is not for everyone, it is hard work and you will be pushed to meet high expectations, but ... if you think you are that individual it will make you grow, you will learn many things, and most of all it will make you a better person

I look at everyday life differently, and most internships don't do that, but the projects that Maui Media works on are very special and will truly change your life.

Thank you for everything you have done, and that you will do in the future. I appreciated every moment and all of the guidance you gave me.

Here's a peek at Kate's favorite project. We launched Do You Remember Love? on Valentine’s Day, 2007. Within five weeks we had over 200,000
unique visitors,
and we expect to hit 1 million visitors by the end of May, 2007.

Check it out and then come back:

How would it feel to have a project like that on your resume?

We’re looking for three kinds of interns:

Copywriters
You may be a good writer … but are you good at using words to persuade others to take an action? This is a great way to find out just how good you can be. Publicity, advertising, website copy, slogans, direct mail, headlines, emails … the list goes on and on and on.

Graphic and Web Designers
Many websites are pretty, but not effective at making money for their owners. Do an internship with us and pay attention to how we put together a campaign/site, and you’ll see how to make well-designed sites that pay for themselves and then some.

Web Marketers
The web is still cowboy country, and everyone is out to sell you classes and tools about how to make money. If you work closely with James Jacobson (more about him in a minute) you’ll be learning from a master and can save lots of money on other people’s seminars.

As entrepreneurs with soul, we’re always looking to leverage talent and resources so that everyone involved benefits.

Our fearless leader, James Jacobson, is a bona fide marketing maven. He was a protégé of Jay Abraham (Google Jay – he’s one the all-time marketing greats).

James charges $1,000/hour to consult with businesses that produce and sell products and services to the conscious consumer marketplace.

James' friends and business associates include some of the best marketers and copywriters around. He’s built and sold multi-million dollar companies, and he’s getting revved up for exponential growth in 2007 (including a brand-new company – the guy just doesn’t stop).

James is a genius at finding the place where soul and marketing meet.

Want to see his personal website? Look at www.jamesjacobson.com. Open up a new window, and slap that URL in there. Then come back and read on.

So, what do you think?

Does his website get across all that you just read about him above?

Frankly, his website could use some work. (We’re being polite because we work with him.)

James put that up in about three hours several years ago when he was fooling around learning FrontPage. He did it as a learning exercise, not as a marketing effort.

James always says "Do what you’re good at – find someone else to do what they're good at."

Think he’s a good designer?

His personal website is just one of the many projects on our plate.

James’ direct-but-honest feedback and guidance will be invaluable to you during your internship - and for the rest of your life.

If you’re a Virtual Intern, you’ll work with us on a single project (like James’ website) or on a collection of similar projects.

Your experience will be custom-designed.

For instance:

If you’re a web designer but not a copywriter, you’ll build sites, not write copy.

If you can generate killer copy, we’ll get someone else to build the site and you'll write the copy.

If you are a budding marketing genius, bring it on – we’ll get you to take a general idea and figure out how it would work in reality.

If you love research, we’ve got thousands of ideas that need further exploration.

And if you're good at all of these things ... heaven help us all!

By now you’re probably wondering why we would trust interns with so much of our business.

The Maui Media Virtual Internship truly is unique.

Here's why:

1. It's Relevant.

We remember searching for internships that look good on a resume, and also provide great, stimulating experience.

2. It's Satisfying.

We remember friends who had internships that didn't seem relevant to the company, but more like slave labor that employers didn't want to perform themselves.

3. It's Ambitious.

We are ambitious, and we want to be big – really big. Being entrepreneurs, we think outside the box. We figure that if you are great – really truly the cream of the crop – and we give you some experience and guidance now, it will pay off for all of us down the road.

4. It's a Winner.

We like creating solutions that are win-win-win for everyone.

The Dream Internship of a Lifetime

At then end of the Maui Media Virtual Internship, you’ll really have something to show for your time, and more importantly:

  • You’ll have a free week’s accommodations in Maui, Hawaii - the number one travel destination in the world.

  • You’ll have outstanding references who really know how to "market" you.

  • You’ll have learned through feedback and example how marketing works in the real world.

  • You may just create the perfect job for yourself here at Maui Media (Crystal did).

"It sounded too good
to be true
but it was all for real."

The Virtual Internship Program has been a more rewarding experience than I ever could have imagined when I applied for an internship last year.

Honestly, I thought it sounded too good to be true - I didn't actually believe that I would be working on stimulating, timely and thought-provoking projects while working entirely from home.

I certainly didn't believe that I would spend an entire week on Maui with my husband. Not only did all of those things happen, but I also came out of this program with a perspective that is very different than the one I had going in.

I believe in myself and my capabilities more now than I ever have. I found strengths that I didn't know I had and addressed weaknesses with support and feedback from people I came to trust.

I found that there are so many things out there that I don't know, but I WANT to know more and keep learning.

I met people that are intelligent, compassionate, astute, savvy, passionate and just plain cool.

I worked with teams and on my own. I worked with the key players and I worked with other interns. I worked when it worked for me whether it was early in the morning or late at night. I enjoyed every minute.

And I continue to enjoy it as a paid consultant brought on shortly after my internship was completed!

Now I have the best of both worlds - I am able to work for a company that I love and continue to learn every day while staying home and taking care of my family. (Except for that one week in February when I left the comforts of home with my husband in exchange for paradise.)

I had never been to Maui (or anywhere in Hawaii) and it was the most beautiful, relaxing place I've ever been. I can't wait to go back!

We spent the week snorkeling, surfing, eating, and just plain breathing. The "ohana" was a wonderful sanctuary filled with natural light, fresh air and one of the most comfortable beds I've slept in in a long time. The week went by way too fast!

The ideal intern for Maui Media is a person with passion for who they are and what they do. A person who reads the ad and looks at the company and something resonates. A person who trusts his/her instincts and knows deep down that this is the right internship, the right time, the right everything. The rest will fall into place.

Ready to Apply?

Okey-dokey.

Throughout the application process you’ll encounter tools we use to run our business, so keep your eyes, ears, and mind open.

Remember, we’re a company that focuses on marketing. So we’re paying attention to how you market yourself as an applicant. Show us what you’ve got.

By the end of the internship, you’ll have learned how to really shine.
